A Special Thank You Gift from Tatay
One day in Zambales, I sat sulking under our old Atis tree. I wanted so badly to rent a komiks book, but I didn’t have a single centavo to my name.Tatay noticed my long face. He knew me too well. He walked over and asked gently, “Ano’ng iniisip mo, anak?”
I poured out my troubles with all the drama I could muster. I needed a way to feed my reading habit.He listened patiently, then asked:“Do you have a brain?”
“Yes, Tatay, I do,” I answered matter-of-factly.“Do you have hands?”
“Of course! I have two hands!” I said proudly, raising both hands high.
“Do you have feet?”“Yes, yes I do!” I replied, jumping to show him how strong my legs were.
Tatay looked at me with quiet wisdom and said:
“Anak, you can use your brain to think of what you can create with your hands… and then use your feet to take them to the market and sell what you made.”
That simple lesson stayed with me forever.
